Come explore Cambodian culture through a close-up and hands-on study abroad experience! This program is open to everyone and all majors! Tentative Dates of Travel: December 28, 2018-January 14, 2019 Course Description: Students should enroll in NRS270 for fall 2018. Travel Winter 2018 and enroll in NRS271 2G for spring 2019. *The course will count for Honors Program credit. Contact Program Director, April Yerges for more information regarding this specific enrollment. GS 270 and NRS 270 will provide a trans-cultural experience through pre-immersion classroom instruction and an immersion field experience. Students will study Cambodian history, political and environmental influences, cultural beliefs and practices, and their impact on health. We will use a variety of sources such as movies, novels, news articles, and a visit to local Cambodian Buddhist temple. Winter 2019 Travel Description: • During the immersion field experience, students will focus on health and well-being within cultural and economic context and the impact of health disparities and limited resources on human health and well-being. • Students will assist in providing well-care assessments, education, and health screening to Cambodian children and adolescents at various urban and rural sites across the country. • Partnerships with Angkor Hospital for Children and the University of Puthisastra Nursing School provide students with rare and unique insight into cultural health. • Cultural Experiences include theater performance and workshops at the Cambodian Living Arts university, travel to the historic Angkor Wat Temple, swim in tropical waterfalls, various shopping markets, Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, Angkor National Museum, cooking classes, bike rides through the Artisan Village, or boat ride through the floating villages.
