Program Description

Course: Student must enroll in GS 340 and 341 (Cor 2 and G tags) Italy to Madison: How Arts Shape Culture and Culture Shapes the World. Spring 2022 course with summer travel.

Course Description: This interdisciplinary and experiential course consists of two parts, the first conducted in weekly meetings during the spring semester and the second in Rome and Urbino, Italy, during May/June. The first part of the course will offer an integrative introduction to the arts, culture and social issues of Italy, from the ancient Romans, to the Renaissance, to the present. Our goal will be to analyze and study how inherently linked the arts and their shared histories are to one another, and to analyze and study how they have always been connected with issues of human life, from ancient times to our contemporary world.

Tentative Travel Dates: June 2-15, 2022

Travel Itinerary: The first week of travel will be spent in Rome, a thriving contemporary city that is also home to some of the greatest treasures of the Western world. Students will visit the architectural ruins of the ancient port of Ostia Antica, the Roman Empire's Colosseum and Forum, St. Peter's basilica and Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel at the Vatican, and countless other attractions. We will then shift gears and move to the countryside where we will visit Urbino. Located off the tourist track, Urbino is a medieval walled city, one of Italy's most historic university communities, and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Application Deadline: November 5, 2021
