Course Structure: (4 credits) NRS 352: Fall 2020 Field Experience: January 1, 2021– January 16, 2021 NRS 353: Spring 2021 (Tags: M and COR 2) Program Criteria: - Must be 21 years of age by the time of travel. - Prerequisites: NRS 340 & 341 and successful completion of COR 1 or COR 199 Dates of travel: January 1-January 16, 2021 (subject to change based on flight schedules) Course description: NRS 352 and NRS 353 will provide a trans-cultural nursing experience through pre and post-immersion classroom instruction and an immersion field experience. Students will study St. Lucian history, economics, governance structures, political and environmental influences, cultural beliefs and practices and their impact on health. Students will care for St. Lucian people with communicable and non-communicable diseases at St. Jude’s Hospital and Clinics, Vieux Fort, St. Lucia. During the immersion field experience, students will focus on the epidemiology of communicable and non-communicable diseases and the impact of health disparities and limited resources on human health and well-being Travel itinerary: Student nurses will work at St. Jude’s Hospital, Vieux Fort, St. Lucia and a community based health center. Cultural experiences will include travel to Castries, the capital of St. Lucia, Castries market, Pidgeon Island National Park, the Pitons, a UNESCO World Heritage site, a rain forest hike with a naturalist, and the St. Lucian botanical gardens and volcano. Application Requirements: - Statement of interest in the St. Lucia Transcultural Nursing course and field experience. - Letter of recommendation from a clinical instructor. - Resume - Proof of Certified Nursing Assistance License (must be active)
