Program Overview: Spend five weeks doing community-based work in Arequipa, Peru, the second largest city and an important historical and cultural center. Also take a language class in Spanish and a culture class in English at the Universidad Católica de Santa María and live with a Peruvian host family. Includes excursions to Machu Picchu and Lima. Take advantage of this unique opportunity to experience Peruvian culture first-hand, directly engage with the community through work projects, improve your Spanish language skills, and earn six academic credits. It is both a majestic colonial city with marvelous old world architecture and a vibrant modern cultural center with lively social opportunities. Resting in a fertile valley between desert and mountains at an elevation of 7,667 feet, the city is blessed with a delightfully mild summer climate with temperatures ranging between 60-77°F. Eternally blue skies provide a backdrop for several dormant, snow-capped volcanoes that can be seen from every point in the city. Arequipa is known as “The White City” because most of its buildings have been built from “sillar” a white volcanic rock not found anywhere else in the world.
